Look before you leap

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

I submitted this story recently and you said if it could perhaps be confirmed it may get the award. Here is the link to the web page, and here is wat it says. The officer leaped over the cement wall thinking he could run to the other side, and fell to his death. He didn't fall, he jumped over.

Police Officer Brian Michael DiBucci

Everett Police Department Washington End of Watch: Thursday, July 15, 1999 Cause: Fall

Biographical Info Age: 30 Tour of Duty: 4 years Badge Number: 1144

Officer DiBucci was killed after he fell approximately 100 feet from a highway overpass during a foot chase of a suspect. The officers were initially involved in a vehicle pursuit of a stolen car, but the suspect vehicle crashed at the end of the overpass and the suspect fled on foot.

Officer DiBucci was acting as backup and was approaching the scene as the other officers were taking the suspect into custody. Other officers noticed he had fallen when they spotted his car on an adjoining overpass and radioed to him. After Officer DiBucci did not return the radio calls, other officers went to investigate and determined he had fallen.

He had served with the Everett Police Department for 1.5 years and had been law enforcement for a total of 4 years. He his survived by his fiancée. He is the first officer to be killed with the agency since 1920.

Neutral: Darwin Award
Thanks for the follow-up, Michael. I couldn't decide between "not amusing" and a DA, but in the end I am going to go VERY neutral DA. For the record, I don't find this very amusing, but I have to admit that under the circumstances outlined in the article, the victim SHOULD have looked before he leaped. I doubt this will make it very far with the readers, but he DOES qualify, and there is some irony to it. We'll see what my fellow mods think!

Neutral: Darwin Award
Again I find myself agreeing with James. If the officer had been in pursuit of a serial killer or a thug with an infant hostage, I might consider the miscalculation a heroic death. Since this was a car thief chase rather than a lifesaving mission, I see some potential for a DA here. Still, it is always best to tread lightly when an incident is complicated by the heat of a police pursuit.
