Man Burned Lighting Gunpowder

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

[This, lamentably, was a near miss for a Darwin Award. Dan Muir, the head of our museum here at Hagley (home of the DuPont gunpowder works)nodded sagely when he read this and said, "This is why we use fuses." -- George Vogt, Director, Hagley Museum and Library]

A man was seriously burned in an explosion near Woodside created when he intentionally poured gunpowder into a charcoal grill and ignited it, fire officials said today.

The 50-year-old man, whose name is not being released pending an investigation, suffered third-degree burns to the hand he lit the black powder with and first-degree burns to his face Monday night, said Michael G. Chionchio of the state Fire Marshal’s Office. He was taken to Kent General Hospital, where he is being treated.

The man was alone in the backyard of a home in the 100 block of Graves Lane in the Meadowbrook Acres mobile home park when he ignited the flash fire, Chionchio said. The fire self-extinguished and no fire damage occurred.

Investigators believe alcohol played a part in the incident, which remains under investigation.

Definitely Keep: For Darwin's Eyes
More detail on a story I initially liked. Now I am having second thoughts, as it seems there was no charcoal in the grill (which is what added the humor/stupidity for me) and that he just put the powder in to see a big flash. I will defer to Darwin on this one...

This and "Grillin' with Gunpowder" appear to have been submitted on the same day. I'm not sure which is the repeat and which is the original.
