Honorable Bomb Disposal

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

A 43 year old lady had recently rented a house in the Leibnitz district, close to the southeastern border of Austria. While cleaning up the garden, she found a 16" long 3" diameter torpedo shaped 3 pound object. It looked like something of military provenience, so she placed it on the passenger seat of her car and drove 12 miles to the nearest police station. She presented the object to the front desk officer. He quickly identified the object as WWII grenade thrower ordnance. On explosion, the lethal radius is about 45', enough to wipe out the police station. Or thoroughly shred a car in case a jolt or an accident set it off while drving around. Officers carefully carried the grenade upstairs onto the flat roof, where a bomb disposal squad took care of it.

The woman was incredibly lucky, although it is not clear if this was because she didn't manage to set the grenade off, or because it was an inert practice round. Imagine the horror on the police officers' faces as they seek cover behind desks and each other

Thanks for submitting, Gunter! This one comes close, but in the end I'm going to go ahead and give her an HM because 12 miles is a very long way to drive with a potentially unstable shell in the back seat. Had she made a phone call to the police followed by a description of the object, they would have come to her, and FAAAAAST! In the end, she was more naive than stupid, but for some reason I feel the need to notch this one up to an HM!

Yes, a stupid move (pardon the pun), and a potentially deadly one. Leave this sort of thing to the "Entschärfungsexperten" of Bomb Disposal. It's what we're paid to do... Thanks, Gunter!
