Lawnmower Man

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Peter, 24, was dead proud of his new wheels. He was sure that his Kubota F3060 4x4 could handle anything. Unfortunately, it was a ride-on mower with limited capabilities and obvious safety concerns. So maybe hitching a heavy trailer to it wasn't the best of ideas, especially when the brakes hadn't been adjusted for years and the mower had never been properly serviced. Never mind, everything seems like a good idea when you're high on cannabis, as Peter was... After loading the trailer with logs, he returned down a long hill at a leisurely 25mph. Unfortunately the trailer began picking up speed, and the poorly maintained brakes failed to check him, snaking from side to side before jack-knifing and ploughing into a brick wall. He died from crush asphyxia caused by the 1.2 ton mower landing on top of him. His family stated that they did not want investigations into his death to be taken any further, quite understandably. As reported in the Southern Daily Echo, www.dailyecho.co.uk, Southampton, Hampshire, United Kingdom, Friday 24th March 2006, pages 1 and 2, headline 'Killed By His Lawnmower'. I can send a scan if it helps.

Not the most spectacular story I've seen of late, but certainly a case of a mook getting his just desserts! Really, he SHOULD have at least known the limitations of his vehicle...or at least saved the reefer for AFTER he did his chores! Thanks, Ian, I do rather like this one in a mellow sort of way...! :-)

Maybe Toss: Darwin Award
I can see the stupidity here - I'm just not sure it's Darwin grade stupidity, although towing a trailer of logs with a ride-on mower is not something you'd do every day. At least I hope not! Thanks for the story, Ian.

I have to admit that I do like this one, though it seems to me that very few people are aware of the fact that downhill with a load can be far more dangerous than uphill...

Reminds me of a story my grandad once told me about an old (1940s) Ferguson tractor he used to use... Actually, I should submit it!
