Bored Teenagers are Dangerous

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

A few months ago a good friend of mine showed me a video that he and some of his other Darwin hopefuls had made when they were teenagers during the late 70's - early 80's.

My friend took his friends and their four wheelers to a desolate area for the typical late night bonfire, only this bonfire was using old tires. Story so far, teenage boys and fire -- no good can come from this...

My friend proceeds to have some fun by jumping his four wheeler over the bonfire. He has no helmet and the ramp he is using is made of plywood less than 6 inches away from the blazing rubber pile.

After watching 15 minutes of this video, thinking that he is truly an idiot, he proceeds to tell me that his four wheeler had lost it's gas cap months ago and he was using an old rag as an interim gas cap.

Molotov cocktail, anyone?

Now, this same individual had since moved to the Miami area back in the early 90's. He was living in Miami in 1995 when Hurricane Andrew hit the east coast of Florida. His idea of fun during that day Andrew made landfall was to stand in the courtyard of a U-shaped building and let the cross draft of the winds from the hurricane hold his body 6 inches off the ground, being supported by only his toes.

I, and his patient wife are still amazed that he is alive to this day.

He cannot be considered a true Darwin Award winner in any case because since these incidents, he has become the father of 4 children. But I felt that I had to make mention of the stupidity this individual has shown in the past.

Thanks, Heather! I always enjoy hearing about people who seem to have a cavalier attitude towards death. Assuming he hasn't done a thorough self-examination yet, I myself feel that this fellow may yet prove himself worthy of a DA! Meanwhile, this is a definite PA!

This is certainly one guy who courts disaster. I don't quite have the enthusiasm that James shows but I do like it. Thanks, Heather.
