Green piece?

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

While I was in the Navy, stationed on the USS Ranger CV-61. Our ship headed to Vancouver Canada, during the world fair. I was one of the many sailors who where up on the flight deck wearing our dress whites. As we pulled in to the port, I noticed a VERY small sail boat which had put itself directly in the way of our ship. The boats owner, was holding up a green piece sign. Had the harbor patrol not come by and dragged him away, he would have been run over by our ship. It is just a matter of interia. A carrier is unable to stop on a dime. At an emergency stop, it could still take a half a mile to stop the ship. So fortunetly for the owner of the small sail boat, the harbor patrol kept him from being another Darwin Award winner.

I'm keeping this one, Lee, because I myself experienced the SAME thing, that is, a small boat getting in the path of a large warship in restricted waters (in this case, the USS Guadalcanal, LPH-7; I was an officer in the reserve component and we were on deployment). The law of gross tonnage just doesn't seem to click with some people, and a bow wave CAN be fatal! Thanks, Lee!

Thanks for the submission. Actually, it's Green Peace (not piece) and they're based in New Zealand.

This would have been Expo 86, twenty years ago now... and even then, while Greenpeace is based in New Zealand, they would have had a branch out here.

Let's make this a keeper then so it goes to the vote.
