She may have been the most beautiful deaf girl in Texas, but she sure wasn't the smartest.

Tara McAvoy was walking from home to her mother's workplace, text-messaging family and friends, as she walked along the railroad tracks in Austin, Texas, when a train struck her, according to the Austin Police Department.

A Massachusetts-born Texan, who liked to quote "Don't mess with Texas," the 18-year-old was going to represent the Lone Star State at the Miss Deaf America Pageant in Palm Desert, California, this July.

McAvoy was walking northbound along the railroad ties, with her back to the train, as it approached. A horn sounded, but "they weren't able to get a response," said Austin Police Department detective David Fugitt. "At that point, they activated their emergency braking system, but they weren't able to stop in time."

Thank you Kevin! THIS is the detail I needed to make a firm decision on this! She was TEXT MESSAGING while walking along the tracks. The engineer did all he could (including an emergency brake application). I guess all the vibration in the world couldn't pry this young lady away from her text-messaging. Perhaps we shouldn't attempt multi-tasking while walking so close to the tracks...!

"Police said the death appeared to have been accidental. It was unclear how McAvoy was hit by the train because she was not standing on the tracks, officials said." statesman.com According to that, she wasn't on the tracks.
