Backyard Bonfire

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

This one may be a waste of Darwin's time, and I apologize in advance, but I found it to be a pretty entertaining honorable mention. Last summer, I went to visit my parent's house, which is next door to my sister's house. No one was present, so I entered and was just hanging out for a little while, when all of a sudden I heard this incredibly loud whooshing sound. It reminded me of a jet engine or something, but I heard nothing further, so I ingnored it. Half an hour later, I noticed my brother-in-law burning scrap wood in the backyard, so I went over for a chat. He appeared shaken, and I was able to prod the info as to why from him. He was attempting to light the fire in his newly built and very decorative firepit. Of course he didn't have any lighter fluid, so....he used....of course, gasoline. He had out too much wood in, soaked it in gasolie and tried to light it. At first it didn't work, and he was confused, so he got real close, looked in.....and lit another match. The "whoosh" that i had heard was a fifteen foot tower of flame rising up in his backyard, which, by the way, has an impressive canopy of giant trees. Thankfully, he was not quite close enough, and did not injure himself. He recently had his first child, so I hope to God no once else in the family ends up here.

This sort of thing is rather common, but as it is a PA, I'll let it pass.
