CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- One student died and another is in critical condition after they fell from a UNC-Chapel Hill dorm room window early Friday morning.

Authorities said that the two male students were running in a hallway at Stacy Residence Hall at around 12:23 a.m. Friday when their momentum caused them to fall through a hallway window three floors up and land onto a concrete ramp outside the basement laundry room.

Other students called 911, but both students were unconscious when emergency personnel arrived.

UNC officials said 20-year-old Keith Shawn Smith, a sophomore from Greensboro died after the fall. He was a resident assistant at the dorm. Tyler Joseph Ely Downey, a 19-year-old freshman from Asheville, is in critical condition at UNC Hospitals.

The above is as reported. Here is more to the story: Witnesses interviewed stated the 2 were racing each other down the hallways. The RA was winning but has so much momentum that when he hit the window he went right through, the second student followed right behind, unable to stop. This is directly from a student as interviewed by the police I work for.

This one is interesting. Two students (including an RA, whose job is to prevent such mayhem) are RACING down a hall so fast they both just crash through a window. This is right out of the cartoons! I'm just laughing at the visual here. I suppose we can use a bit more detail, but I also appreciate the extra lines you added to the dry news report. I will vote to keep this one, and with more detail it could be a keeper! Thanks!
