2nd February, 2006, London, England. Apple’s near ubiquitous iPOD is an amazing device, which can play music, video and completely isolate you from the rest of the world. This last function is so effective that one British cyclist took this to extremes and isolated themselves from the world and the gene pool forever. Thirty two year-old law student Patricia McMillan was on the way to her part-time job as a waitress in the upmarket Kensington district of London, and taking the Mayor of London’s advice and cycling to work. Unfortunately she was also wearing her iPOD, and failed to be aware that a large truck was driving nearby due to the voluntary deafness from the iPOD. The truck knocked her from her bike and crushed her beneath it’s wheels, killing her. We will never know what was on that final playlist.

Maybe I'm a technophobe, but I don't yet own an iPOD. I'm not sure how to vote on this. My generation had the ubiquitous SONY "Walkman" as the musical isolation device of choice, and trucks flattened many a Walkman-equipped cyclist/jogger with equal vigour. Perhaps in the end only the technology has changed, and the modus operandi is "too common". I will defer to my fellow moderators...!

Her name was the same as the journalist in the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy!

I shall both disagree and agree with James - I don't have a iPod either, but I still see a lot of cyclists (and pedestrians) wearing earphones while trying to navagate heavy traffic. Good write-up, Mark! And I'm not even going to try to guess what her final/fatal playlist was...
