Snow camping - the wrong place

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

There was an accident resulting in a fatality during pre-dawn hours this morning at Mt. Bachelor. Resort personnel were performing routine snow removal around 4:00 am in the West Village parking lot when a man who was apparently in a sleeping bag was hit by the snow removal equipment. The incident occurred during pre-dawn hours, and it was snowing at the time. Due to snow removal operations, Mt Bachelor policy does not allow wintertime overnight camping or overnight parking for unattended vehicles. The resort only permits occupied self-contained recreational vehicles to park overnight in a designated area upon obtaining authorization from resort officials.

It is unclear if the young man was killed by a snow plow or snow blower, or if he died before being struck at around 4am Friday, said Sgt. Kevin Dizney with the Deschutes County Sheriff's office. Dizney, who is not the lead investigator for the death, said on Saturday he was unsure how the Sheriff's office came up with a positive identification.

Neutral: For Darwin's Eyes
We've already gotten this one. Some new info here (the rules about no sleeping in the parking lot), so this may affect my original conclusion that this incident was more a case of bad luck than stupidity. I will pass this on to Darwin for her approval...thanks for submitting!

As I rejected the last one, I'll reject this too ... as I suspected in the original story - "It is unclear ..... if he died before being struck at around 4am Friday." Thanks anyway.
