Brake Fluid for a Toothache?

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

DAMMAM, 15 January 2006 — A man learned a hard lesson in taking unqualified medical advice when he lost six teeth after using brake fluid to relieve a toothache, the Okaz daily reported yesterday. Taking advice from a friend — obviously not a doctor — the man applied the brake fluid to his gums. Being a highly hydrosgopic substance (meaning it is attracted to and bonds with water molecules), the brake fluid caused the man’s gums to swell terribly over the two hours of his self-prescribed medication. His friend apologized for the bad advice.

I like this one. Nothing like a "friend" and a "home remedy" to cure a toothache! Brake fluid is one of the more nasty toxins and can be fatal if injected. I'll vote to keep as an HM. Well, hopefully his toothache no longer bothers him! :-) Thanks for submitting!

I couldn't find the link, and I'm dubious about the claim that brake fluid is hydroscopic.

Losing a few teeth isn't dangerous enough for me ... ;-)

I'm not dubious about the brake fluid being hygroscopic claim, because I have read the label. And right below that it says "POISON". I'll mark this one because, advice from a friend or no, before you put _ANYTHING_ in your mouth you check to see if it can kill you... unless you're stupid.
