snowmobile versus train

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

(Victim's name withheld). Snowmobiler, age 21, rides his machine on railroad tracks on Christmas Day, 2003 outside of Hudson Falls, New York. Riding during a blinding snowstorm at the time of his travel, he neither heard the blast of the train's horn nor its engines, nor did he heed the light coming upon him from behind. He was overtaken by the train, which was unable to stop in time.

It took the train one whole mile to stop, after which it was hard to distinguish the snowmobile from it's chaser. Four hours later, the rescue workers were able to separate machine from train.

I checked the archives. This is a first submission! There is one other story where a fellow tries to cross the tracks in a snowmobile and plows into the side of the locomotive, but this story one-ups it! Our victim rode ON the railroad tracks, and during white-out conditions, yet even!!! As Bugs Bunny would say, "What a mor-ooon!" I'll vote to keep this one! Thanks...

I can't verify this article in spite of an exhaustive search of our media archives, but I did find another from which I'll quote: "in the past five years, nine local snowmobilers have been killed riding on tracks". That in mind, I'll accept this as a PA. Coincidentally, found a good one in Xmas 2003 while searching, where a guy on a stolen snowmobile rides straight in to the side of a house - worth a write-up! Meanwhile, Scott, if you have a link or newspaper article, send it in. Thanks!
