Lake Minnetonka Ice Fishing

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Two Shakopee men swam to shor last week in Deephaven after their fishing boat, loaded with rock, sank in Lake Minnetonka, about 300 yards from shore. David Bollig,20, and Luke Muer,19, were planning to use the rock to create a fish habitat on the lake bottom when wave crashed over the stern of their boat, sinking it quickly, according to Sgt Haans Vitek of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Water Patrol Division. Only one of the two men was wearing a life jacket, which they shared as they swam back to shore in 35 degree water on Nov.24, according to Vitek. Both men made it to shore and were treated for symptoms of hypothermia. "A 300-yard swim, even in good water can be difficult," Vitek said. "They were lucky to make it back." The men were obligated to have their boat removed from the bottom of the lake, similar to the responsibility owners have for vehicles that go through the ice in the winter, Vitek noted. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will oversee the removal of the boat and determine if a citation will be issued to the men, he added. Fortunately, these two men have more time to test Darwin's Theory. Stay tuned.

There are a few holes in this story, IMO, but going out in a small boat full of rocks in freezing weather sans life jacket sounds like an accident waiting to happen! I suppose they COULD have waited until the weather was a bit warmer...I will pass this on to my fellow mods for their esteemed opinions...

I think this is stupid enough, because I'm thinking they were in a lake, right? Waves in lakes aren't very big - mostly wash from other boats. So they must have been pretty darned overloaded to be sunk by a "wave" in a lake!! As James says, couple this with the weather and inadequate safety equipment and it all equals HM for me! Lucky guys!

I like the story and while I live in Texas ("Ice? What's that?"), I think that it's good enough for an Honorable Mention.

This could have shaped up as a classic Darwin Award. I like the story and think it will make a fine additon to the set.
