Lose face while making popcorn

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Before she became my former wife, she had this experience. When she cooked popcorn she would place the oil in a covered pan, place 2-4 kernals in it, and when the oil reached the right temperature, the kernals would pop, then she would place the full amount of kernals and let them pop away. Generally this works.

Liking popcorn and watching TV, she started the popcorn, placed the few kernals in, and got distracted. When the show was over, she wandered into the kitchen, remembered what she was doing, and placed the pan into the sink to cool off. At this time she opened the pan.

The super-heated, oil vapor and air mixed. The ball of flame blackened the ceiling over the sink. Luckily other than losing her facial hair she was fine.

Next time she just turned off the heat, and let the pan cool before opening it.

Funny what TV will do to people! Generally, fireballs of this nature are smoky and a bit scary but usually that's about it. I suppose she COULD have set her pad on fire, and it is an amusing enough (if commonplace) incident for me to nominally keep as a PA!

I'm not sure on this. It's amusing, but probably never potentially life-threatening. Still, she should've known better!

IT is a good lesson that I've not heard before. A little short but good for a PA.
