Two men drown in Gasconade County lake Associated Press

OWENSVILLE, Mo. - Two men died after the paddleboat they took without permission flipped over in an icy lake at an eastern Missouri resort, authorities said Tuesday.

It happened about 2:40 p.m. Monday at Lost Valley Lake Resort in Gasconade County, about 70 miles west of St. Louis. Gasconade County Sheriff Randy Esphorst identified the victims as Christopher Woodson, 25, and Travis Lawrence Jr., 21, both of St. Louis.

The bodies of both victims were recovered about 20 yards from shore. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

A third passenger of the boat, Basil Oliver, 17, of St. Louis, was able to swim to shore. He was treated at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Washington and released.

Esphorst said the men took the paddleboat from the resort's closed boat house. The privately-owned boat did not have a plug in it, causing it to sink once on the water, the sheriff said.

The lake was partly frozen, and the temperature of the water was about 37 degrees, Esphorst said.

This was submitted earlier without much detail (I voted to toss), but now I am starting to like this one! Stealing a paddleboat for a nice jaunt on an icy lake...and not noticing the MISSING PLUG! THIS GAG IS RIGHT OUT OF A LAUREL AND HARDY COMEDY SHORT! I imagine it all happened so quickly that the victims were still patting themselves on the back for getting away with stealing the boat when it suddenly sank...I vote DA!

While not as enthusistic as James is, I will admit that this is definitely pointing towards a possible DA. Thanks, Eugene!

i can see this one as succeeding if it was written up as James sees it in his mind's eye. As it is, it is a little dry...
