Suicide by Boat Ramp

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

The body of a 55-year-old pediatrician missing since November has been recovered from inside a car removed from the Oakland Estuary, authorities said Wednesday. Zehra Attari apparently got lost after taking a wrong turn and accidentally drove into the estuary that separates Alameda from Oakland.

On Tuesday night, police divers found Attari's body inside her gray Honda Accord, which was submerged, upside down, in about 20 feet of water off Grand Marina on Alameda's north end. The Alameda County coroner conducted an autopsy Wednesday but hasn't determined what caused her death.

The discovery ended a fretful 43 days of searching by friends and relatives of Attari, 55.

Authorities said they were investigating the likelihood that Attari drove in the rain down a boat ramp at the end of Grand Street, not realizing that it led straight into the water.

That's pretty stupid. If you're that lost, and the weather is that bad, you really ought to be going slow enough to make sure you can see what you're getting in to!

I'd normally toss something like this if it were some catch-penny jamoke involved, but for cryin' out loud she was a pediatrician! Someone who SHOULD have had the smarts to know better obviously didn't. Add to that the fact that had she maintained a cool head, she probably could have escaped! Looks like another DA hopeful here...!
