Don't Pick The Flowers

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Thousands of people visit zoos around the world every day, and the vast majority of those people survive these trips unscathed. That wasn't the case, however, for a 20-something woman who recently visited the Melbourne Zoo. At some point during her visit our anonymous hero appears to have forgotten that she was at a zoo, but instead thought she was at a botanical garden. Spying some African lilies that she decided she just HAD to have, she climbed over a 3 foot tall fence in a quest to retrieve her prize.

Blissfully ignorant of the fact that fences in zoos are there for your own protection she reached through a second 18 foot tall fence in order to retrieve the flowers. Unfortunately for her one of the inhabitants of the fenced-in enclosure didn't take too kindly to this unwanted intrusion. A young lion promptly pounced on the protruding arm, deciding that it was time for lunch. Luckily for the woman, but unluckily for Darwin, she managed to escape with all but one finger intact, so she's currently only in the running for an Honorable Mention. One wonders, however, what kind of flower could result in a full Darwin Award for this woman.

In the immortal words of the zoo director, "It's not a wise thing to climb over a safety barrier and collect a flower here at the zoo."

Definitely Keep: Honorable Mention
Yep, I know the type, and there's a word for people like her: entitled. She felt ENTITLED to just climb both safety barriers as if they were obstacles between her and the flowers she felt were rightfully hers. I'm not sure how it all works in Oz, but in the USA, she'd probably sue the zoo...and win! I'll give her an HM, her arrogance deserves one...

I think this is a keeper! (No pun intended...) We have recently rejected similar stories, but her reason for sticking her arm in the cage, being to retrieve a pwetty fwower, makes her very, very dumb!
