Killed by fire extinguisher

Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung (www.neue-oz.de) Osnabrueck, Germany December 2nd, 2005

Explosion on Neumarkt: No expert opinion Public prosecutor closes the investigation: "Third party fault impossible"

Osnabrueck The public prosecutor has closed the investigation concerning the explosion of a fire extinguisher and the death of a 62 year old man on the Neumarkt. On november 19th the man carried a fire extinguisher which exploded in his arms at a bus stop. The explosion killed him, parts of the extinguisher hurtled across the street. Police said it was a miracle that none of the bystanders got hurt. Two minutes later the explosion would have happened in a bus. The man, who worked as a locksmith at the university, was a sport marksman and had filled an old fire extinguisher with compressed air at his working place, thereby probably exceeding the permissible pressure. The public prosecutor thinks that it was only the man's fault and didn't order an expensive expert opinion.

Das Unternehmen trifft also kein Verschulden.

I'm not too sure about this one. For one thing, we don't know WHY he filled an old extinguisher with compressed air. Perhaps if we knew, that fact might add something to what I presently feel is a lackluster and incomplete story. Thanks for submitting just the same!

I agree the write-up isn't great, but it sounds like he was trying to charge the extinguisher himself using a compressed air cylinder at work, to save the nominal fee the fire department would've charged him to do the same job ... safely! I think this warrants further investigation and could definitely have legs.

Since he was a marksman, I have to wonder if he was planning to supercharge an air-rifle. But I do think that it qualifies (if only marginally).

I'm with Greg here with a better write-up he could be a good DA

I think a decent write-up could make this a DA
