Tarzan Scoutleader

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

I work at a Boy Scout camp and in doing so encounter not only many children, but also their parents. In one of the areas where people sleep there is a large, steep hill covered in vines. At 4 in the morning one of the leaders decided to go swinging on the highest vine they could find. They swung out to a height of 40ft where their grip slipped and they fell dislocating their shoulder and breaking their collar bone. They were driven to the hospital where a few days later another discovery was made. The vine they swung on was a poison ivy vine that had made contact not only with their hands but also their shoulder and collar now underneath the bandages.

I think this could do with a better write-up, but I like the idea of a scout leader (who should be setting an example and teaching the kids about outdoor living on the camp) not only tries a Tarzan stunt and gets it wrong, but chooses POISON IVY to swing from! What a muppet! It's got potential I guess, though I'm not entirely convinced - neutral it is.

Boy Scout outings and poison ivy go hand-in-hand, and I've rarely heard a "camp story" where a poison ivy-related incident did NOT occur! Whatever the case, nobody died or was removed from the gene pool. Even though the person in question was probably in pain for sometime thereafter and caught a lot of good-natured guff from his shipmates, he's probably still with us and capable of reproduction! :-)

I'll go with Greg on this one. I've had poison ivy and the thought of him itching under his bandages made me both laugh and say "ouch!" at the same time.

It may not rate media confirmation but I liked it for the poison ivy. It made me laugh.
