This story appeared in French in Le Journal de Montréal, December 1, 2005. It was also on the web at http://www2.canoe.com/infos/societe/archives/2005/12/20051201-075300.html.

Here's what this Nominee did to enter the Highway to Heaven.

Apparently Étienne Beaulieu was a speed freak and a 'tuning' fanatic. His distraught mother was keen to point out that he enjoyed modifying his car on his own. Étienne was also spiffy with the web as well, having looked up an interesting fuel mixture to boost the power of his modified Pontiac Sunfire (SUN FIRE! Ha!).

Turns out Étienne got excellent acceleration on his final drive : a witness reports his car exploded in a huge ball of fire, just like in the movies, nearly 100 feet high. Car parts and Étienne rained down , the latter having flown 300 feet before crashing to the ground. Firefighters and ambulance technicians were unable to re-ignite his engine. Étienne and his burning rubber will be sadly missed. The Sunfire was also fatally wounded.

While the write-up isn't as comprehensive as I'd like, it IS an English write-up! Thanks! I'm a bit trepidant, but the imagery and the irony (I have to admit that "Sunfire" is TOO good to pass up under the circumstances) are spectacular. I also like the amateurish fanaticism (read stupidity) the late Mr. Beaulieu displayed in his quest for speed. In the end, the poor slob probably never knew what hit him. Gone in a ball of flame...

That would've been fairly spectacular to see! I'll consider this. I like the way the police won't say what gases he was using. Too many idiots might try it, I guess!

I'll go with a DA on this.

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
This is a DA if ever I have seen one. Although I might consider the Sunfire an unfortunate casualty.
