Lightning Strike

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Personal Experience: I work at an observatory. During a thunderstorm I went to check on a workmate to make sure he was safe from the Lightning (as I had just heard some violent thunder claps) I climbed up the tower whereapon lightning prompty struck our tower. It went through his foot and my head. Workmates joked that the electricity took the path of least resistance. We don't climb in the towers during thunderstorms anymore.

Picture of said tower is here (on the far right) http://ilrs.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/stations/select.cgi?order=by_site_name&site_code=STL3&site_name=Mt.%20Stromlo&pad_id=7825&tab_id=general

I don't know, this is a funny story but somehow doesn't cry "stupidity". I'm not sure of your safety procedures in thunderstorms (you didn't mention them), so I really can't judge this based on the usual criteria. Finally, you were looking out for your colleague (hardly stupid). You DID survive, and what your co-workers said is hilarious, but I will have to vote neutral and see what my fellow moderators think. Thanks for submitting!

"We don't climb in the towers during thunderstorms anymore" made me chuckle, like it was ever a good idea! ;-) I like this one for some reason. Short but sweet.

This one's a good PA - looking back, it's the height of stupidity to climb the tower - what could you have done for him anyway??? I love the "electricity took the path of least resistance" quote. Please leave your name and address so that we can track your DA success in the future :-)
