Her Last Fit

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

A few years ago I drove a local transit bus. I'm quite familiar with hostile, drunk and argumentative passengers. One 40-something woman always boarded my bus on Saturdays. She rode home from a large shopping center. She lived pretty much out in the stix. The first time I met her, she absolutely demanded that I let her off the bus in an area where there are no bus stops. When I said I couldn't do that she became completely irate, shouting and using profanities. I found that she was always about half drunk, so I tried to tune her out, which was very hard to do. Over the course of several weeks, every time she saw me driving she'd run over, jump on my bus and immediately start shouting and cussing me out. On her last day as a passenger she'd been very profane and particularly nasty. I told her that I would see if I could get her barred from my route and she had a fit! In a rage when she got off, her last words to me were "I'll file a complaint about you, and I'll see that you get fired. For as long as I live I'll make your life Hell!" She bounded off the bus in a snit, ran around the front, directly into the path of a pickup truck going 55 or 60 mph. and that, was the last time she ever rode the Line 29.

Neutral: Personal Account
Thanks for the story, Greg. I'm going to sit on the fence on this one and see what my fellow Moderators say, mainly because I'm not sure whether there's some mental instability involved in the woman's behaviour.

Definitely Keep: Personal Account
She sounds more angry than mentally ill. being quite familiar with "road rage" and all its derivatives ("bus/subway rage" is one derivative), I can say with reasonable confidence that she was probably not mentally ill in the true clinical sense and was thus responsible for her own actions. In the end her own anger and the resultant carelessness did her in. I vote to keep!

Maybe Toss: Other
I don't know. She sounds like a deeply unpleasant person who got her comupance, but I'm not sure this is "uncommon" enough to get an award for me.

Well good for you! But without verification and a more accurate timeframe I do not think it can be a Darwin.

While I am aware of the road rage thing, it is unlikely that it would persist over several days / several incidents. So I kind of have to think that there was some form of mental imbalance going on here. Without a check on that, I cannot assign it better than neutral.
