Police: Fight with lighter fluid turns fatal

01:33 PM CST on Tuesday, November 1, 2005

From KHOU-TV Staff Reports

A man died in a fiery accident late Monday night.

According to Houston police, a married couple was arguing at their apartment on Dairy Ashford and threatened to douse each other with lighter fluid.

KHOU-TV

The couple was arguing in their apartment at 9903 Dairy Ashford when the accident occured. Sgt. L.A. Flores said the couple was partying and alcohol was involved.

Lighter fluid got on the man’s T-shirt, and when the couple was playing with lighters, he caught on fire.

Police said he was taken by a private car to the hospital where he died of heart failure. Doctors said the man's blood alcohol level was several times the legal limit.

The incident is ruled as an accident unless the medical examiner rules differently. The wife is being questioned.

Definitely Keep: For Darwin's Eyes
A bit more info on this pending story. Apparently, it is being ruled an accident, which (to me, at least) shores up my previous decision to vote DA (though neutral), as it is not a murder. FYI, the reason for the whole altercation was as follows: the wife got upset with hubby because he didn't bring home charcoal for the grill (this from an earlier report). It's SO trivial it's...stupid!

Neutral: Darwin Award
Given James' extra research, I'm prepared to go neutral on this. :-)

More info on the previous story - it is starting to look like a potential DA
