What do you do if you want to get past a pile up on a moving walkway 30 feet high? Yes, you wait it out.

Not so in this case. Just get up on the banister and slip around the mess of trolleys thought this potential Darwin winner. The risk of doing so became very apparent when he was unsuccesful to negotiate the trolleys and went for a high dive. Not advised on a concrete deck below.

JOHANNESBURG

Tourist dies in JHB airport accident

Fri, 14 Oct 2005 A 50-year-old foreigner died in the domestic hall of Johannesburg International Airport on Friday when he plunged off the banister of a moving walkway into the arrivals hall 10 metres below, said the Airports Company of SA (Acsa).

A person had stopped at the end of the travelator walkway in terminal B, causing a back-up of trolleys.

"The gentleman passenger attempted to move around the obstruction by climbing along the railing of the travelator," said Acsa spokesperson Jacqui O' Sullivan.

"The passenger then lost his balance and fell to the arrivals level below."

Airport clinic staff were on the scene in less than a minute but the man, believed to be either Austrian or German, had died.

His family was being contacted and the Department of Foreign Affairs had been informed.

The travelator was shut down for an on-site investigation, said O-Sullivan.

A slightly better write-up, which suggests the victim acted out of impatience (never a smart thing to do). While this is certainly uncommon and no doubt made for an interesting airport sideshow, I'm still undecided on the motive of the victim and whether or not he acted with arrogance. I think the stupidity IS there, however, so I'll let this one squeak by.

No, it just doesn't do anything for me. Yes, it was stupid but I don't think we're looking at Darwin grade stupidity here. The reporting on both stories (there's another one with a different link) is lacking in the detail we need to understand exactly why it happened.

Hmmmm ... repeat, but better write-up. In spite of Sheryl's comments, I do see Darwin grade stupidity - the same potential Darwin dying antics I see from my fellow tube commuters every morning. I don't care what the circumstances were - you don't risk your life by performing a hire wire circus act just to catch a flight!

More information, so I shall change my former stance and agree with James and Greg that this is worthy of consideration for a DA.
