Leave the Stunts to James Bond

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

This happened some 20+ years ago and I can't find any reference anywhere so at best it's just a personal account...

I grew up in Stamford, CT, which lies right along Long Island Sound. Stamford has a harbor that caters mostly to private boaters. For protection the harbor has two stone jettys - basically piles of large rocks that form underwater walls and stick up out of the water about 5 feet. These act as breakwaters to protect the boats on the inside from any large waves on the outside.

As I recall, two locals had spent the better part of a sunny summer day relaxing at the dock imbibing copious amounts of their favorite alcoholic beverages. At some point, a neighbor later stated, the two began discussing a recent James Bond movie they had both seen. I believe the movie in question was "Live and Let Die". If you know the movie you can probably see where this is heading.

Well our two heros, sufficiently inebriated, decided to recreate one of the more entertaining action sequences from the movie. They hopped into one of their boats and headed out into the harbor.

Once in sight of the breakwaters they hit full throttle and headed straight for one of the jettys. Unfortunately for them their visions of flying gracefully over the jetty in the boat only came partially true. The boat was destroyed running into the jetty and our two heros were launched unceremoniously through the air only to land on the top of the rocks. Needless to say both managed to successfully remove themselves from the gene pool.

I am directly familiar with the grade of arrogance and self-styled invincibility these two displayed (Stamford is a well-to-do suburb well within commuting distance from NYC and I deal with plenty of arrogant Connecticut drivers who often drive as these two boaters boated), so I can believe this story! I will try and find any information on this, as this may be eligible for a DA (despite the alcohol, the bravado these cats displayed in doing themselves in went above and beyond)...Thanks, Bruce!

I love stories about people who think fo themselves as James Bond superheros. That's the sort of arrogant stupidity we're looking for! Thanks, Bruce.
