This past weekend I was out at my local butcher and saw a darwin contender. As I was leaving out of the butcher shop, a lady driving a mercedes with its engine shooting flames pulls into a gas station across the stree, and stops about 30 feet from a giant propane tank. In this area, there were many other driveways and parking lots, but this idiot picked a gas station and parked next to a propane tank filling area. Thank heavens firefighters were on scene in minutes to protect the rest of us from the driver's stupidity.

This could certainly use a funnier and more detailed write-up. I would like to see a few more details as well (ie WHERE all this took place). Maybe there was mention of this in your local news, and if so, location would be helpful. Otherwise, pulling a flaming car into a gas station, given other safer alternatives, sounds pretty stupid to me...

I dunno. It was stupid of her, but as often as people do dumb things with flames around flamable stuff, it's also pretty common. Not to mention the fact that someone who's still driving a car while flames are shooting out of it, instead of abandoinging it, might be too dense to realize they were near something flamable anyway.

If memory serves me correctly, I did something quite similar in my college years. I saw smoke coming from around the hood of my car, so I pulled into a gas station (I did, however, park as far from the pumps as possible!) figuring that if I couldn't put out the fire myself, they might be able to help me.

I'm erring on the side of too common - I've heard this a lot, and seen it myself with an arguing couple with a flaming Ford Capri pulling in to a petrol station fore-court near Hull, UK. Given that it's not that uncommon, to go in it ought to be a better write-up IMHO...

With Jack and Greg's comments, I have to consider this to be too common. And you know, there is a good chance that if you pull into a driveway, the people there won't have a fire extinguisher, if they are home, but you _know_ there will be one at a gas station and that someone will be there...
