Old mine still has OOMPH!

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

We moved into our new house about 8 years ago and when we arrived we found that the previous owner had collected a lot of junk. Among the assortment of small items and a large junk pile outside we found an old world war two anti submarine mine. All the spikes had been removed and it had been stripped of its explosive cargo. The previous owner of the house decided that he was going to put it to some use and cut a 2 foot diameter hole in the top and welded in a hatch at the bottom. We don't know specifically what he deseigned it for but my father decided to use it as a burning ball. I helped him load it up with old carboard and paper in the morning before i had to go off to school which was a little over a mile away. It all happened during our first passing period. After my first class. Just as i was entering my next class everyone heard this loud BOOM! A few girls screamed and most everyones ears were ringing. Everyone had thought a bomb had gone off. After my mom had come to pick me up i told her about the explosion. All she did was mumble something about someone being an idiot. When i arrived home i found my dad lying on the couch slighty balder than he already was with his face bright red with a few blisters and missing his mustache. It turns out that he started the fire by pouring 10 gallons of gasoline onto the cardboard then casualy throwing a match into the ball. The compressed explosion forced most of the blast out through the hole on the top into my fathers face. He wasn't able to hear pretty much anything for a week and it's a miracle as to how the ball itself didn't fly apart.

Definitely Keep: Personal Account
I know this sort of thing is common, but I'm laughing out loud right now! And yes, I AM surprised that it wasn't worse. Of course, I find myself asking what is a "burning ball" and what purpose it might serve (burning old cardboard?)...whatever the case, it sounds like some contraption Wile E. Coyote would cook up...!

I'm positive I've read this exact same account, right down to the personalization details, on this site. I'm going to mark it a repeat.

Neutral: Personal Account
As a personal account, I like it. A quick search of the Archives failed to turn up the story, so I'll vote to keep it.

Well the write-up made me laugh out loud! Like it! I'm going "Neutral" given Kelly's reservations, but were it not for that I would have this as a "Definitely Keep". Nice story anyway.

I also remember this same story, word for word. Alas, with the search engine on the fritz, I can't prove it.
