This involves an ex-boyfriend of mine from my first year at university in halls of residence. It qualifies only for an honorable mention becuase he survived to date me!

When we first got together, his friends often used to joke about the macabre appearance of his right hand which was covered in scars. They'd always ask me to ask him how he came to get the scars but he only ever went quiet and said he'd had an accident. It was only later after a lot of ribbing that he adventually admitted the truth to me.

We both lived in the same halls of residence which were based on a womens' prison, except instead of bars they had huge floor to ceiling windows.

On our first week in halls we were warned several times not to press on / hang out of / pressure these windows in any way, as they were built in a way that made the glass prone to shattering, normally on the person standing nearest to them.

Indeed, in the first month we were there, a girl was hospitalised after she pushed the glass instead of the frame while opening a window and it shattered, slicing into her artery.

Clearly none of these warnings had stayed between my ex's ears. He eventually admitted he'd got the scars on his right hand coming back into halls after a drunken night out.

He'd got so rat-arsed, he'd mistaken his reflection in one of the windows for another guy trying to start a fight with him. (He MUST have been drunk!)My boyfriend responded to the "man" by throwing a punch - and naturally he punched the window which shattered all over him, causing deep lacerations and, you guessed it, slicing into an artery.

He was rushed to hospital and doctors proclaimed him lucky to have survived. No wonder he wouldn't admit it to me!

Definitely Toss: Too Common
I hate to reject this, but we get too many stories of drunks who are so far gone they can't tell reality from fantasy and so do something stupid. Had he been completely sober at the time, that would be different.

Not withstanding what Kelly said, I find this amusing enough for a Personal Account.

I have to say I was going to nix this one as another collegiate drunk story until I got to the part where he mistook his reflection for another person ready to start a fight! That's new to me, and as such I will vote to keep it as a PA. I can only imagine the "exchange" of fighting words before the fateful punch was thrown...
