Idiot having a dental check

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

My cousins own a dental practice in Colchester, England. They also have another dentist working for them. They related a story that happened at their office.

My cousin was outside of the surgery room when he heard the shrieking of a nurse who was screaming "Blooooood". He ran into the surgery room to find a huge pool of blood covering the floor. The other dentist had apparently frozen and couldn't move and and on the dental chair, a patient seemed confused and was looking about themselves. It soom became evident that the patient was bleeding profusely from a severed artery in his arm. My cousin immediately grabbed the patient and applied pressure to the wound. He managed to reduce the bleeding somehow (perhaps he tied a tourniquet - I don't know). Eventually, emergency medical personnel arrived and the patient was taken to the hospital and apparently survived.

It turns out, this brilliant patient had decided to carry several knives with him to the dental office. No one knows why. But his method of carrying the knives had been somewhat peculiar. He had placed several large kitchen type knives in one of his pockets, with the blade ends sticking up! He was invited to lie down on the dental chair, and while doing so, he had managed to bend over enough to have one of the knives slice into the inside of his upper arm. The volume of blood that had emerged was apparently quite impressive.

If it wasn't for my cousin, he apparently would have died within 20 seconds

I'm sorry, but I have a hard time believing this story. I dare say that this would have had to be reported to the police and probably showed up in the local news paper. Can we have a reference, please?

Please can we have a verifiable link?

I have to agree with the other moderators. If there is a reference, we can use this; otherwise it is a little too similar to the person who had a steak knife in their trouser pocket and fatally cut themselves by bending over (now in the slush pile).

Ewwww, that makes me feel quite funny. Checked the local press - as it happens I live near where this (allegedly) happened. Haven't heard anything and couldn't find any verification either. Need more evidence. Sorry.
