07/23/2005 Woman killed while shocking for worms

LITTLE SIOUX - A Little Sioux woman appears to have died from electrocution when attempting to gather worms for her fish Friday morning.

Harrison County Sheriff Terry Baxter said the woman, whose name has not been released pending notification of relatives, appears to have been shocking the ground near her residence for night crawlers. Baxter said the ground was saturated with water.

He said the woman was using what appeared to be a homemade shocking device that was plugged into an electrical outlet.

Baxter said a friend of the woman had brought his children to her home to feed her pet fish. He said the children found the woman's body in the back yard.

She was transported to Missouri Valley's Alegent Health Community Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead, Baxter said.

He said an autopsy is scheduled for Saturday at the Douglas County Coroner's Office to determine the exact cause of death, but he said it appears she was electrocuted.

Baxter said the woman's husband had left for work before the accident occurred. Little Sioux and Mondamin Rescue units responded to the scene, he said.
