Killed by silicone injection

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Hello. This is my first submission to Darwin Awards and I will like to congratulate you for your great job and original idea.

The facts happened in Palma de Majorca (Majorca Island, Spain) and can be checked here (it’s in Spanish tough):

http://www.ultimahora.es/segunda.dba?-1+6+326498

Here is a translation of the article. Please, if you post this story at your site (and I hope you do so ;) feel free to correct it in any way you may find necessary.

"Ultima hora newspaper, Tuesday, July the 19th, 2005 A MAN DIES IN PALMA AFTER INJECTING SILICONE IN HIS PENIS

A 35 years old man passed away last weekend in Palma because he injected silicone in his penis. Days before the man entered by his own foot in Son Llàtzer hospital urgencies area and, although he already was in serious state, had time to explain the doctors what he had done. Its health was getting worse until the point he died two days after entering the Intensive Care Unit.

Medicine experts have explained to Última Hora that the man underwent a severe pulmonary embolism caused by an obstructed artery. It seems that the man injected silicone in his penis thinking that it would increase its size. What happened was that the silicone, which had been injected in vein with a hypodermic needle, navigated several arteries until the substance formed and obstruction. It caused what in medical terms is known as a thrombosis embolism.

Consulted medicine experts have declared that they don’t remember any other similar case in Majorca and consider an aberration to inject silicone in the penis, still more with the belief it will increase its size.

Deceased relatives have said that the funeral was celebrated last weekend and commented that the victim was born in a foreign country and had been residing in the island for some time. Being a case in which the victim recognized that he was the one who injected himself it has not required a police investigation."

A big hug from Majorca,

Moraglar Tanuk

The link has expired and I can't find the story any where on google. I'd like a verifiable link. I'd like to give this one an award but I really feel it's necessary to see the original news story first.

While the article has expired, I'm still inclined to give this a thumbs up for an award.

If we can verify this - I'd go with it being a DA. However, had a quick look for links to Majorca and thrombosis, and get this : http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=9764460&dopt=Abstract Is this the same story? It dates from 1998

The paper in question does seem to be reputable, so I'll give this one the green light.

Difficult to verify, but British journalist, Jeremy Clarkson, reported on it briefly in the UK's "Sun" tabloid newspaper as well on 23rd July 2005, so it sounds like it could be real, even if the link has expired. Given that I have found another legitimate source referencing this story I think it deserves a DA.
