Train kills fireworks watcher

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

William Wright was one of about 100 people who set up coolers and lawn chairs on the tracks of a railroad to watch a fireworks display in Pensacola, FL on 7-4-2005. When a train came he was unable to get off the tracks and was stuck and killed. Two others (Timothy Marks and David H. Butcher) were injured by flying debris. The full story is in the link above and at http://www.weartv.com/news/Stories/July/0705/traindeath0705.shtml and http://www.wftv.com/news/4682259/detail.html

It is also reported on some email discussion groups that the tracks had several no trespassing signs at the area of the incident.

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
Normaly we don't give awards when bystanders are hurt, but as the debris was the fault of the train, and their being hit by it was because they were also being stupid and sitting on the tracks, I think this time that rule doesn't apply. People getting killed crossing tracks or walking on them is common. Sitting on them to watch fireworks...that's rather unusual.

I will agree completely with Kelly on this one.
