Teen dies playing in storm

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

A Fayette County High School graduate is dead after trying to boogey-board through a culvert during Wednesday night's severe storms.

The body of 18-year-old Danen Clarke was found near Lake Peachtree about mid-morning Thursday, authorities said. Authorities said the teen drowned while trying to surf through sewer or drain crossing under a local road.

Apparently, Clarke and some friends and relatives were out cavorting in the water when remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy whipped through parts of Henry County, lashing out with strong winds and heavy rains.

Clarke and others in the group tried to board through the watery culvert – but, Clarke didn't make it.

Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown called Clarke's death a “tragedy,” saying it could have been easily avoided. He told 11Alive's Denis O'Hayer that no one should have been out during the storm in the first place.

Clarke's parents have not commented on their son's death, instead remaining in seclusion at their home. His friends recalled him as a fun-loving young man.

I don't think I've heard of anyone killing themself quite like this before.

I'm of two minds. Yes, it's stupid... but there is an implicatoon here that other people there were doing similar things. And 18 is borderline for maturity... particularly where groups are involved.

I'd like more information on this.
