Chainsawer falls to his death

2005 Reader Submission

(Original material in hungarian language).

A 54 year old man has died of injuries at Kulcs village, Fejer county, Hungary, Central Europe, while working on contract to remove some trees from a garden.

He was standing at the top of a six meter tall ladder and cutting tree branches with an electric chainsaw, which was supplied by a homemeade twice-extended cable.

He did not wear any rope or safety harness and was grabbing the tree with one hand while holding the chainsaw in the other. The chainsaw bounced when hitting a harder section of the tree and it went into his chest.

This injury caused him to lose balance and he fell from the ladder and died on the spot due to extemely severe cuts and internal injuries. The lethal accident was eye-witnessed by his wife and his son.

I was not impressed until I notice the ladder was 6 meters, not 6 feet. That's pretty high to be without safety gear.

I agree. With proper safety gear, he might have been able to hold the chainsaw with both hands.

I agree. 6 metres without safety gear is a bad thing...

I wanted to check on that 6 meter ladder figure but I can't translate the story. If it's true, then that combined with everything else he was doing is incredibly dumb.

6m is high up - that may earn him a DA here, but there needs to be a better write-up
