Ice Fishing???

2005 Reader Submission

Honourable Mention Nominee

The following is a posting verbatim from the Grey Bruce Outdoors Forums. It describes an incident on March 28, '05 at a popular fishing spot on the Maitland river in Ontario. On this date the river is just opening up with the spring thaw, having been jammed side-to-side with winter ice. On the banks huge walls of ice and snow form, and as they melt they pose a threat to those attempting to challenge them for the best spot on the river's edge - as you will read in this eyewitness account.

"I decided on getting my feet wet today fished for the first time since the river opened up it was a beautiful day for most sun was shining the guides wernt even thinking of icing up was good to shoot the **** with some of the guys i hadnt seen since last fall saw a guy on the north side of the river standing in the water up to his waist up against a 15' wall of ice bank the odd chunk breaking off and falling in didnt seem to bother the guy even after myself and another angler warned him thats pretty dangerous over there well after some more chit chat i just happened to be looking straight at this( im being nice ) Frigging IDIOT standing up againt the 15' ice bank and to my surprize a chunk that would probably measure in at over a couple tons fell and hit the guy in the shoulder spun him around luckily he only got hit in the shoulder and not square in the back as it would of been a death without any doubt sure he got wet to the top of his head but the idiot thought maybe he would continue fishing until i yelled across to him and asked him if he just learned anything he stopped and thought for a couple seconds and yelled back to me yes i better get the hell out of here does CABIN FEVER realy make people that stupid" - Posting by Maitland Forum Moderator

I was there to witness this event. If this guy had been two feet further then he was it would of been a sad day on the river because no one was near to help him out if the ice had took him under. Let be safe use caution guys - Posting by Forum Participant

Standing under an ice overhang on a warm spring day does seem kind of foolish, but I'm not all that moved by the write up.

Neutral: Honorable Mention
It could definitely use a better write-up, yes.

I'd like a url to the forum. At the moment it's not even an eyewitness account, and I can't find the forum online.

I'm going to go along with Kelly. Without a valid reference, this can only be a Personal Account.

I don't think this is going to be anything but a personal account. If the person was not badly hurt, there will be no medical records - just eyewitness accounts
