4X4's and invulnerability

A female driver ignored police warnings and drove her luxury vehicle over a flooded bridge in Sunninghill on Sunday, Johannesburg police said.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Sanku Tsunke said Barbara Ntshona's BMW X3 was swept off the Braamfontein Spruit bridge in Witkoppen Road and found 1,5km down the river. Her body was found inside the vehicle.

Tsunke said Ntshona (33) had ignored police warnings not to cross the bridge at 15 minutes past midnight on Sunday morning, following severe thunderstorms in the area.

"Once she reached the bridge, her vehicle was swept off by water and fell into the river. Sandton detectives have opened an inquest docket and investigations are continuing."

In another incident, Emily Moseki (36) drowned when she "tried to cross" the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens dam at 10pm on Saturday night. Two male companions retrieved her body.

Police are investigating. -- Sapa

I'm always happy to see another 4x4 off the road.

Actually, 4x4s are designed as "off the road" vehicles. But there are people who see a flood and say, "I've 4 wheel drive. I can make it through safely..."

There are a lot of these hitting the news just lately, including one where a state is fining stupid drivers -- first fine for stupidity on the books -- but this is the first of these that I recall on the site.

Good to see it off the road. Too many time I have seen individuals lacking intelligence doing this kind of stunt. This one should be a warning but will probibly go unnoticed.
