Guns unloaded?

Hmmm....this poor Swiss Army first lieutenant, in a break during a shooting excercise, uses his bayonet to a stage a (mock?) attack on one of his fellow soldiers and gets shot and killed.
See the story in our national tabloid http://www.blick.ch/news/artikel16168 and translate it from German to English. Another source is http://www.sfdrs.ch/system/frames/news/sda-news/index.php?/content/news/sda-news/meldung.php?docid=20050104d48262096524386096
What facts make sure this person at least makes it to the honorary mentions if it doesn't score a Darwin?
- it is an imperative rule that during breaks in shooting excercises, all weapons are unloaded and it's the platoon leader that has to check the guns (and this first lieutenant was the platoon leader).
- then he attacks a soldier (mock attack? one will never know) with a bayonet and the soldier grabs his rifle and shoots him. There's a rule that goes like "Never bring a knife to a gun fight."
At least this lieutenants sacrifice will make sure rules are followed a bit more closely in the Swiss Army. Submitted on 01/08/2005
