Bendy Buses and bent motorcycl

2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

This is a little late but, then so are two of the individuals involved. Unfortunately I can give neither the names nor an Exact date, though I can testify to the accuracy of the story. My wife being a senior nurse in the operating theatre at the hospital that treated the nominee's. The day for our hero started when he and two friends decided to steal a motorcycle and have some fun. Now 3 people on a motorcycle may be OK for a police display team, but it does not work too well for untrained teenagers. When said teenagers decide to speed through the city centre at rush hour without helmets or protective clothing the odds are looking good that evolution will yet again intervene, and indeed it did. As our Anti-heros sped out of a side street they encountered one of Bradford's bendy buses. For those not familiar this is effectively two single decked buses joined end to end with a flexible central section to allow them to take tight corners. Unfortunately our intrepid trio found that bendy buses don't bend when you hit then side on with a motorcycle.

The result of this impact was that motorcyclist no1 died as a result of head injuries, No3 sustained serious multiple injuries (but survived) and No2 walked away with minor injuries. Cushioned by his airhead-bag friends presumably. However it is at this point that No2 shows his determination to join the Darwinian halls of fame. Within 12 hours of the accident (including his time in casualty and being cautioned by the police.) he was back out on the streets, he had picked up an additional "friend" and stolen a second motorcycle. This time he headed off along Sticker Lane away from the city centre, where he found that heavy goods vehicles don't bend either. However only his passenger and the original owners of the two motorcycles were in a position to learn from his experiences.

I agree with all the others. A well written story, and a determination to succeed.

Have to agree with the other moderators. The one guy whoo walked away from an accident that basically wiped out two friends and then went on to repeat the process by which they met their fate -- of this sort of perseverance are award-winners made.

I'd like some verification on this, but it's a good story

On the one hand, traffic accidents are usually too common, but I must applaud the determination of the young man to - as the 60s bumper sticker had it - live fast and die young. And I also agree with Bill - a decent write-up and also an obvious use of a spell checker. Thanks, Anonymous!

Decent write-up, and the candidate went the extra mile.
