Almost drowned by an octopus

2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

My brother who by the way is actually a very bright guy, told me this story quite a few years ago. He must have been drinking when he related his tale, otherwise he never would have given me such "ammunition" (hee hee).

He was wading in the ocean and checking out the wildlife, he loves fish and the like, and spotten an octopus on the ocean bottom. Bending over, he grabbed the octopus and tried to pick it up. However, the octopus had other ideas; wrapping half his tentacles around my brother's wrist and half around a good sized rock! As a result my brother found himself in the unfortunate position of having his head underwater and unable to stand. He said he was forced to carry the very heavy rock towards shore until he was (finally) able to get his head above water and breathe. He really had thought he was going to die. The worst of it, he said, is that when he finally was able to catch his breath he realized that at some point the octopus had actually let go and swam away. He could have drowned for nothing, and noone would have ever known why.

This is only one of the incredibly stupid things he's done, thank god he's never had any kids. (I love ya bro') Just goes to show, even geniuses can do dumb things.

Maybe Toss: No Self-Selection
It is hard, perhaps even impossible, to predict the actions of a virtually brainless animal like an octopus. I don't see the stupidity here, frankly...

You don't have to be dumb to be stupid!

Ok Ok I confess I did a similar thing once but never told - but for a personal account of a brothers stupidity I like it and rember dear submitter you share the same genes.

Maybe Toss: Lacks Excellence
It's an interesting way to almost do oneself in, but I'm not convinced the level of stupidity is quite up to Darwin standards.
