Suspect Run Over by Police

2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

10/10/2003, Arlington, Texas

A man was arrested for drunken driving after a minor two-car accident. He tried to run into traffic and was arrested, handcuffed, and put into a patrol car. He kicked out the back window of the patrol car in an escape attempt. The officers put him into another patrol car and had patrol cars following the car to jail. He kicked out the back window on that car, too, jumped out the window onto the freeway, and was promptly run over by the other police cars. He later died at the hospital, and is therefore eligible for the Darwin Award--

Fleeing drunken driving suspect killed

08:29 AM CDT on Friday, October 10, 2003

By CYNTHIA VEGA / WFAA-TV

ARLINGTON - A drunken driving suspect was fatally injured late Thursday after he escaped from a squad car and was run over by other Arlington police cars.

Police said the man struggled with officers investigating a minor two-car accident near West Green Oaks Blvd. and Interstate 20. A police statement said the man, who was suspected of driving while intoxicated, attempted to flee into traffic and became combative as officers approached him.

He was taken into custody and placed in a patrol car, but kicked out the rear window in an escape attempt.

Police said the man was secured in a second patrol car but again kicked out a window along I-20 on the way to the city jail. As the vehicle slowed, police said the suspect jumped out of the moving car and was struck by other patrol cars that were following behind.

The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to Medical Center of Arlington where he later died.

The officers involved in the incident were assigned to routine administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

Neutral: Darwin Award
He at least shows creativity in his manner of getting killed whilst resisting arrest.

Maybe Toss: Too Common
Meets the criteria but a bit too common. There are gus escaping from custody everyday. Most get shot.

Definitely Toss: Too Common
We've had quite a few cases of people who killed themselves while attempting to escape from police custody - including running across interstate highways, jumping off of bridges, etc. This is more of what we call a "stupid criminal" story than a DA. But Darwina has the final decision, and I'll abide by it.

Meets the criteria. Must be a lot smaller than me to get out of one of those windows. If this was a novel, I'd suspect the cops helped him.

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
although the Use of alchohol is a major factor in this persons judgment, He meet the criteria for all 5 rules. give that man a fish.
