Who would have thought that blood is an excellent conductor of electricity...
I normally don’t do anything that would get me close to a Darwin Award or even an honorable mention. However this last Saturday I can close to becoming a candidate.
I was working on my shed trying to install an outside outlet so I can plug in my bug zapper, weed eater, etc... I managed to get the whole completely cut without any problems. The trouble started when I took my framing hammer and took aim at the anchoring nail on the new power box. With near all my might I promptly missed that nail all together and hit my middle finger’s nail. (Wrong nail!) After cussing for about a minute, I proceeded to finish the job.
I managed to get the 4 feet of wire ran from an existing outlet to my new outlet. All the time my finger started to bleed heavily. Granted I should have stopped what I was doing to take care of my finger. I knew that when the pain fully hit, I would not want to do anything for a while. So I continued to work and I started to get sick to my stomach and dizzy. (Sure signs of shock). Anyhow, at this point I was no longer thinking clearly because of the severe pain and shock.
I continued with hooking up the new outlet WITH the power still on. I would have been ok if I did not have a finger squirting blood. To make a long story short, as I was hooking up the hot wire and being careful to not touch the shaft my screwdriver, I knew the second when the blood completed a circuit from my hand on the handle of the screwdriver to the metal shaft. Naturally, I could not let go. Since I was on the verge of passing out from the pain, my knees buckled under me and I was able to break the circuit. Submitted on 09/15/2003
