TV Hurricane

2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Denmark is quite unused to having hurricanes hit, and when one hit in early December 1999, one women was unprepared. She was anxiously watching news of the hurricane when the TV went out. The antenna on the roof had come loose and started banging around. Determined not to miss any information on the hurricane, she decided to fix it. Despite the gale force winds, she climbed up on her roof to try to set the antenna up again. She was blown off by the hurricane winds and killed.

I saw this in newspapers, magazines, and on TV in Denmark at the time, but all in Danish.

You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. Going on a roof in a hurricane is DA-level stupidity in any country in any language.

I do like this one - I wouldn't normally go up on the roof when it is windy, let alone hurricane force winds. Though it could use a better write-up.

I'd go with Jack- Ignorance more than poor judgement.

I dithered on this one, but finally decided to say no. People who live around the Gulf Coast or up the Eastern Seaboard of the US know what sort of winds hurricanes pack, but as the submitter says, "Denmark is quite unused to having hurricanes." So I call it an accident.

I am of two minds about this one. Surely it fulfills the requirements -- it's stupid to climb up to a high point during a hurricane -- but it doesn't feel particularly funny. Let the readers decide?
