Hollow-Points Hurt

When I was a kid, I had a lil .22 rifle I had bought, and kept in my closet. I've always been kinda experimental at heart, so I wanted to experiment with alterations to the bullet nose, and see what they would do.
So, I made different cuts and various other changes to the noses, then shot them into wet phone books to see what they did. Most just kinda broke up into different pieces, and tore the hell out of the book.
I then got the bright idea into my head to make a few hollow-points. I tried making them with a nail, but I couldn't quite carve out the cavities. So, in my you mind, I decided I needed to heat the bullets up with a candle to make them easier to carve.
I guess my first mistake was ever trying it ay all. My second was not realizing what was going to happen when the shell got so hot I had to wrap it in rubberbands to hold.
Anyway, I was sitting at my desk, bullet in the candle's flame 7 inches from my nose. Then, I heard "PMMOPF!" and a loud ringing, and hard large black areas in my vision. I got a little scared when I looked down, and could see the tendons through an inch-long gash in my left hand.
I was taken to the emergency room, laughing for some unknown reason. They superglued my hand back together, and I never tried to alter another bullet since. Submitted on 08/06/2003
