stay on the line

Father-of-three John Feltcher called emergency services on his mobile after ploughing down an embankment in his van and coming to rest on a railway line. Mr Fletcher, 47, was apparently unhurt and relatively calm as he called 999 to report the accident - as heard on the recording which was played to the board of inquest. The tragic irony of the opperators words left the jury and victims family distraught as the conversation was played.

After taking down his details the opperator urged him to 'STAY ON THE LINE - I will just contact British Transport Police' The noise of the two-coach service from Birmingham to Sleaford could then be heard before the line went dead, leaving the stunned opperator saying 'Hello, Hello..' Apparently he did what the opperator told him and stayed - ON THE LINE.

If he knew he was on the tracks and had the means to escape, may qualify.

Definitely Toss: No Self-Selection
It is funny write-up, but: after the initial accident he was probably in shock and didn't really absorb what was happening until it was too late. So: no stupidity, no DA.

Agree, needs verification.

Can we have a follow-up with verification? I was unable to locate this (of course, there are a lot of "Daily Mail" newspapers).
