Tree Hard, Head Empty
2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance
A man and his buddies, long accustomed to annoying their neighbors (me!) by snowmobiling at high speed through sleeping neighborhoods, finally received their come-uppance - and in the process, my nomination - when one of them, Brian Sabinsky, 25, of Loch Sheldrake NY, ran himself headfirst into a tree late Tuesday night (Feb 18, 2003). It is not his reckless speeding in the middle of the night through a residential area that makes him eligible, in my opinion, nor is it the fact that the men were driving unregistered, uninsured snowmobiles, without helmets, while drunk! Although these are spectacularly stupid ideas, and ultimately responsible for the demise of the unfortunate Mr. Sabinsky, it was one final bit of information about the recently departed that caused me to nominate him: He was a firefighter! Yes, our Brian "The Brain" was a fireman in the same company which was dispatched to peel him off the tree; the same company which preaches snowmobile safety locally, which responds to gruesome drunken, helmet-free snowmobile accidents every year, and the very same company which even posts "helmet safety" notices on an illuminated sign 1/8 of a mile from Mr. Sabinsky's home!
Clearly, while many have been as foolish as Brian in their choice of recreational activities, few have been so uniquely aware of the possible repercussions prior to making that choice!
