I was young recriut going through dive school in Panama city florida. I was show a video on dive safety and was amazed at what I saw. (Im sure US Navy has a lot of footage on these things) One video divers were working over the side of an Air Craft Carrier, Nuclear when some one turned on the Main Seawater Induction pumps. The divers were by the seawater induction grates when that happened and got sucked on them with there feet and hands getting sucked through the 2 inch diameter holes. There were killed pretty quick if I remember and they had to remove the grate and hoist it on the ship to remove the bodies and they had a picture to show one of the guys with his hands and feet sucked through the grate. (That scared the @#@% out of me and always stayed far away from the grating onboard my submarine while doing our security dives)
Also a note on a similiar incident 2 divers again were over the side of anther carrier, but they were replacing a seawater induction grate which ways several hundreds of pounds. The divers were tighed off to tenders top side and the grate was tighed of to a crane with the divers tighed to it.
while in the water, the divers cute them selves free to manuever around the grate on the ship to bolt it in. For some reason unknown only to the divers they cute they grate free I guess thinking that they could move into position easily, with the grate cut free and the divers cute free but still tighrd to the grate they proceeded to Davey Jones Locker neer to be seen again.
