Elephant tramples man to death
Posted Mon, 06 Jan 2003
A man was trampled to death by an elephant at the weekend after he and a game ranger tried to chase a herd onto a road for tourists to see, police said.
Inspector Francois Vermaak said the incident occurred on Friday at the Gazebo Game Ranch, a private ranch about 40km from Komatipoort.
Vermaak said that Laybert Magagula, who worked on the ranch as a tracker, startled a cow and her young calf while trying to get the herd onto the road.
The cow became nervous, gave chase and walked over him, Vermaak said.
He said that although the elephants were used to humans, the elephant that trampled the man was protective because she had a calf.
The game ranger was unhurt.
