JACKSON, Miss. -- A Jackson police officer shot a 17-year-old in the thigh Thursday night after the teenager allegedly flashed a red laser pointer that the officer mistook for a gun sight.
Jackson Police spokesman Robert Graham says the teenager, whose name was not released, was treated at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Graham says the officer, who also is not being identified, has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
Graham says the officer involved in the shooting was on patrol with his partner when they noticed four people standing behind a business acting suspiciously.
When the officers approached the group, all four people ran. Graham says the officer noticed the red light shining on his chest after chasing the teen into a wooded area.
Graham says the teenager could be charged with aggravated assault on a police officer.
