Three people stole firecrackers in a factory by prying the main entrance door
Caserta (Italy), they stole crackers and their car exploded: 3 died
The victims are still to be identified
CASERTA - Three people died this morning as a consequence of the explosion of the firecrackers they just stole and that they were transporting by their car. It happened at Orta di Atella, a small village in the province of Caserta (Italy). The explosion occurred along a countryside road that is not very crowded at Xmas time. The three people died instantly due to the powerful outbreak that destroyed their car.
The firecrackers theft in a small factory could have taken place yesterday night or at dawn. According to the local police, and thanks to the owner of the factory who gave the alarm, the three victims had pried the main entrance gate.
The factory makes low cost firecrackers, very powerful and used for the patron celebrations, not for the New Year's Eve celebrations. To explode the firecrackers the three thieves have stolen, mortars should be used to project the firecrackers high in the sky, where the explosion finally occurs.
The owner had gone to the factory to feed his dogs and told the investigators he did not realize what had happened, even if he discovered at once the burglary. Then, he went to a countryside esplanade, not far from his factory, where he discovered the remains of the car, a Peugeot 106 that was also stolen yesterday in another small village in the province of Naples. Two of the three corpses were in close proximity of the explosion site, while the third corpse had been projected 65 ft farther.
The three corpses were not burnt to death, but died following the very strong shock wave determined by the explosion.
